Hospira, a global provider of pharmaceuticals and medical equipment, recently partnered with Project HOPE to address the growing need for pediatric cancer services in China. Today, there are an estimated 45,000 new cases of childhood cancer diagnosed each year in China. Last year, more than 14,000 children received care for cancer at one of Project HOPE’s long time program sites, the Shanghai Children’s Medical Center (SCMC).

Project HOPE and the SCMC have advanced greatly in their battle against childhood cancer over the last 12 years, but there remains much work to be done. Through a $1 million grant from the Hospira Foundation, Project HOPE will create and implement several healthcare initiatives to support the development of the pediatric oncology program at SCMC, including the construction of a 148-bed Oncology Tower that is scheduled for completion in 2012.

Hospira is honored to partner with SCMC and Project HOPE to advance the treatment of childhood cancer in China. In addition to raising the overall standard of care through new research and education, this pioneering program will help empower patient families and, most importantly, provide hope and encouragement for children who are undergoing cancer treatment,” said Dr. Tim Oldham, President, Asia Pacific, Hospira.

In addition to their financial support, the Hospira Foundation will have the opportunity to donate medical supplies such as IV solutions and pumps, antibiotics and chemotherapeutic agents, particularly to children and families who otherwise would not be able to afford access to such resources.

Since SCMC opened in 1998, Project HOPE and its partners, like Hospira, have been able to make significant contributions to the improvement of children’s health in China,” said Stuart Myers, Senior Vice President of Global Health at Project HOPE. “With Hospira’s support, Project HOPE will ensure the new SCMC Oncology Tower and its programs become a model of effective and compassionate care for children with cancer throughout China.
