Five new Project HOPE medical volunteers have joined the team aboard the USNS Mercy for more than four-months to provide health care and health education as part of the U.S. Navy Pacific Partnership 2012. The mission will provide medical services to thousands in Indonesia, Cambodia, Vietnam and the Philippines.
Dr. Beth Hartung, a physician from Napa, California is a first time volunteer with Project HOPE. Dr. Hartung is working with in internal medicine aboard the USNS Mercy. "I am hoping to learn more disaster readiness, in a calm environment," she says.
Patricia Olenick, Ph.D., from Rockport, Texas, is a Certified Nurse Midwife participating in her second volunteer mission with Project HOPE. She is providing health education through Subject Matter Expert Exchanges in the Philippines. "I am looking forward to going back to the Philippines. I lived there when I was a child and have not been back in 44 years."
Susan Opas, a Nurse Practitioner from Woodland Hills, California is participating in her second volunteer mission with Project HOPE. Opas is working in the pediatric ward aboard the USNS Mercy. "I am looking forward to working in the communities we visit,” she says. “I also am looking forward to the experience of sailing on a Navy Vessel.”
Emily Wardell, a Nurse from Austin, Texas, and a first time volunteer with Project HOPE is looking forward to using her nursing skills onboard the USNS Mercy and ashore during Pacific Partnership 2012. "It is going to be an interesting experience."
Mary-Beth Wargo, a Pediatric Nurse from Austin, Texas, is a Nurse from Austin Texas is a first time Project HOPE volunteer. She will be working aboard the USNS Mercy though Vietnam. "I am excited to be working alongside the Navy, and looking forward to learning new skills," she says. "I plan on learning as much as I can and to do my best to help provide the best care to the patients I see."
