Dr. C.J. Huang

I was saddened to learn of the recent loss of one of Project HOPE’s greatest supporters.  Dr. C.J. Huang passed away on October 30, 2012 in Palo Alto, California.  I had the privilege of getting to know C.J. and his wife Ha-Lin Yip Huang over the past decade, and I have been greatly impressed by their generosity and dedication to our work in China.

An an engineer and industrial executive, C.J. relocated to the United States in the 1980’s, but he remained committed to his birthplace of Liu Yang in Hunan Province by donating generously to causes there and elsewhere in China.

C.J. first became acquainted with Project HOPE in 1993.  HOPE was in the midst of constructing an outpatient clinic at the Red Cross Hospital in Liu Yang, and he championed its cause.  He continued his support to HOPE over the years by establishing a pediatric emergency burn care program and a patient care addition at the Liu Yang Hospital.

A graduate of Wuhan University, he partnered with us to support the Wuhan University School of Nursing.  C.J.’s donations were also instrumental in developing the Shanghai Children’s Medical Center.

Last year, I presented an award from HOPE and the Shanghai Children’s Medical Center to C.J.’s son Paul Huang on his father’s behalf, and Paul spoke a bit about his father’s dedication to philanthropy.

Paul said, “Our parents taught us to always help other people, not because it improves our karma or even to give back.  We help others because it adds to our own personal happiness.”

I think I speak for everyone at Project HOPE in saying that we are tremendously grateful for C.J.’s commitment to the people we serve in China -- and beyond.
