USNS Mercy Pacific Partenrship 2012

Project HOPE volunteers are joining the Pacific Partnership 2012 mission aboard the massive USNS Mercy hospital ship as it heads toward Cambodia, Indonesia, the Philippines and Vietnam on a more than four-month mission to share health education and health care.

This year marks the seventh year of the Pacific Partnership mission and the seventh year Project HOPE volunteers have been onboard to offer help.

I participated in Pacific Partnership 2011 onboard the USS Cleveland last year, and I am very excited to be a part of this mission again. I look forward to working with the talented medical team now coming aboard and sharing their stories and images of their work with Project HOPE supporters.

As the ship sails to its first country, volunteers onboard the USNS Mercy are participating in training exercises to prepare for the work ahead.

USNS Mercy Pacific Partenrship 2012 Kelly Scatton

Kelly Scatton, a Registered Nurse from Oklahoma and a first time Project HOPE volunteer participated in a surgical training exercise. The key focus of the exercise was to help the medical team to correctly asses the patient’s needs and send them to the right areas. All the medical teams were tested from dental to optometry to mock surgeries.

“We learned how to use the USNS Mercy hospital forms and how to transcribe them onto the flow sheets, a new style of paper work for everyone,” says Scatton. “I was able to learn the limits of the corpsmen working with me, which will help me deliver better care to patients.”

Though this was the first time the medical team ran through this training, by the time the USNS Mercy pulls into the first mission port the medical team will be a well-oiled machine.
