On my most recent visit to Project HOPE’s programs in China, I had the privilege of attending the unveiling ceremony of the Dr. C. J. Huang bust on the grounds of the Wuhan University HOPE School of Nursing.
A longtime and generous supporter of Project HOPE, Dr. Huang was a beloved alumnus of Wuhan University and an extraordinary friend to the HOPE School of Nursing.
Dr. Huang first became acquainted with Project HOPE in 1993. HOPE was in the midst of constructing an outpatient clinic at the Red Cross Hospital in Liu Yang, Dr. Huang’s hometown, and he championed its cause. He continued to support Project HOPE over the years by establishing a pediatric emergency burn care program and a patient care addition at the Liu Yang Hospital.
A graduate of Wuhan University, he partnered with us to support the Wuhan University HOPE School of Nursing. Dr. Huang’s donations were also instrumental in developing the Shanghai Children’s Medical Center.
It was the support of Dr. Huang, over the past 20 years, that enabled the HOPE School of Nursing to invite distinguished international consultants to teach here in Wuhan…and enabled Nursing School faculty to travel to the United States for advanced training, to improve their knowledge and skills, and enabled students to participate in exchange programs with nursing schools in the U.S. and Europe.
Through the generous support of Dr. Huang and his family, the Red Cross Hospital was able to send nurses and physicians to study in the two affiliated hospitals of Wuhan University and HOPE School of Nursing.
Dr. Huang passed away in 2012, but I was especially pleased that Dr. Huang’s wife and daughter, who share his compassionate vision, were able to join us at the ceremony in Wuhan.
It has been inspiring to witness the development of the HOPE School of Nursing over the past decade, thanks to the dedicated support of Dr. Huang and his family. Project HOPE will further Dr. Huang’s vision of expanding nursing education in China through continuing support of the HOPE School of Nursing at Wuhan University.
