Lisa Petersen joined Project HOPE in Namibia in July 2013 as Technical Advisor for TB and HIV Programs, Deputy Chief of Party, in four regions of Namibia: Kavango East, Kavango West, Oshana and Oshikoto.
One moment that stands out to Lisa, which demonstrates the impact of Project HOPE programs occurred in the Oshikoto Region. There, a 32-year-old male patient on TB treatment requested that the Project HOPE Field Promoter test his children, who were less than five years of age, for TB. Because he had received training in TB from Project HOPE, the man was consequently concerned about his children. His son did not have any symptoms at first, but developed symptoms later. He took the initiative to take him for further examinations. Unfortunately his son was diagnosed with TB. Both are on treatment.
The father continues to provide health education in his community on TB prevention and encourages people to seek health care. He thanked Project HOPE for giving him much needed information on TB, not only to help himself, but also to help others in his family and community. Lisa says that this shows how the information shared with one individual can have an impact on that person’s family and entire community.
Watch Lisa describe in this video the power of women helping women and their communities with lifesaving health education and a village savings and loans program.
