They’re Poor, Sick and Dying

July 15, 2015

How Your Support Saves Lives by Fighting Poverty

When you’re in Honduras, you see poverty. Grinding, heartbreaking poverty. And where there’s poverty, there’s disease. They’re two sides of the same coin.

In these poor regions, a simple sickness like diarrhea can cause death from dehydration. Easily preventable illnesses like tetanus turn into killers. And serious diseases like tuberculosis that have been controlled in other countries will kill tens of thousands of people.

But when poverty eases, health care improves. And that’s how you’re making a difference in Honduras.

Your support has created Village Health Bank programs here. People receive small loans to start kitchen-table businesses, so they can support themselves, get health care and raise healthy families.

How This Mom Helped Her Daughter

When people in poverty get the chance you provide, they can change their lives.

Mirian got a small loan to create a business selling clothes. The money she made enabled her to pay for lifesaving tests for her daughter, who suffers from seizures. Mirian had tried to get a loan from other sources, but they always turned her down. Then she found Project HOPE, and through the Village Health Bank, she can support herself and her family. At last, they’re happy and healthy.

With Some Help and Hard Work

You’re helping people lift themselves out of poverty and free themselves from disease.

Yolanda always had the drive to improve her financial situation, so when she got a loan through the Village Health Bank, she was off. Today, she runs her own business. She spends an entire day making tamales, and then she sells them to the workers, tourists and families that stop by. With the money she makes, Yolanda can take care of her five kids, keeping them healthy as they grow up.

Single Mom Struggling No More

Kelin is living a new life, healthier and happier, because of your support.
Kelin is living a new life, healthier and happier, because of your support.

Kelin, a single mom with two small children, did laundry to survive. But now, thanks to a small loan through the Village Health Bank, she runs a grocery store, and continues to receive training that will enable her to grow her business. Her life is transformed. She makes enough to support herself and her children. For the first time, she has hope for the future!

These are just three of the many people you’ve helped. They’re happier than they’ve ever been. They’re pulling themselves up out of poverty. They’re distancing themselves from disease. And the thanks go to you.
