When 2-year-old Ehson was brought into the rural Central District Hospital of Vaksh, Tajikistan, his temperature was 104˚F. Ehson was convulsing, experiencing respiratory congestion and losing consciousness. Dr. Usmon Djabarov was grateful to have Project HOPE’s humanitarian aid on hand to treat him. “I diagnosed Ehson with pneumonia and anemia,” Dr. Djabarov said. “The antibiotics and acetaminophen donated to Project HOPE by GlaxoSmithKline, Bristol-Myers Squibb and McNeil Consumer Products saved his life. After four days of treatment, he was eating again and back on his little feet.”
Five-month-old Vali has a similar story. He arrived at the Central District Hospital of Vaksh suffering from double pneumonia and anemia. The baby was breathing with extreme difficulty, and his temperature was 100.4˚F. He was vomiting, and often losing consciousness.
Because of Project HOPE’s regular humanitarian aid to Tajikistan hospitals, Dr. Djabarov was able to prescribe the best medicines available to heal the baby. The medicines, provided by Project HOPE, free of charge to the family, included antibiotics donated by GlaxoSmithKline and Bristol-Myers Squibb Company. In addition, Dr. Djabarov administered Children’s Tylenol to Vali, donated by McNeil Consumer Products and multivitamins donated by Mead Johnson Nutritionals. After five days, Vali’s temperature normalized, his coughing decreased, phlegm disappeared, and he was breathing normally again. Most importantly, little Vali found himself with a healthy appetite once again.
