Project HOPE was founded on the willingness of doctors, nurses and other medical volunteers to travel the globe on a floating hospital ship - the SS HOPE - to provide medical care, health education and humanitarian assistance to people in need.  While we now operate land-based programs in more than 35 countries, Project HOPE, in a unique partnership with the U.S. Navy, has again returned to sending medical volunteers on board ships around the world to provide medical assistance, health education programs, vaccinations and humanitarian assistance.
From our work with tsunami relief in Southeast Asia, to Hurricane Katrina relief in the Gulf States, and disaster relief in Haiti in 2010, Japan 2011 and the Philippines in 2013 the generosity and support of volunteers has been truly inspiring.

Since partnering with the U.S. Navy in early 2005 to provide tsunami relief, Project HOPE has also participated in 29 humanitarian assistance health education missions with the U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Force utilizing nearly 1,200 HOPE volunteers. These missions have:

  • Provided care to more than 806,000 people

  • Offered health education to more than 221,000

  • Delivered $33 million in donated medicines and medical supplies

As a result of this work, we have also expanded our volunteer efforts to land-based programs to provide long-term health care and reform. Every day of the year, there are Project HOPE volunteers providing lifesaving care and health education around the globe!
