Project HOPE began its operations in Albania in 2002 by assessing the needs of the country with regard to HIV/AIDS. In 2003 Albania became one of the countries involved in a regional program funded by the Swedish Development Agency to fight HIV/AIDS in the Western Balkans. In this program, Project HOPE worked with 17 local NGOs in the area of HIV/AIDS prevention for vulnerable populations. We also provided training to infectious disease specialists and primary care physicians on various HIV/AIDS-related subjects.
Since 2011 Albania has been one of the countries benefiting from Project HOPE’s multi-country Strategic Medical Re-Supply Program. Through this innovative humanitarian assistance program Project HOPE ships donated medicines, medical equipment and supplies to hospitals and health clinics in Albania so that the limited resources of these health care facilities can be applied to improving the quality of patient care.
