Project HOPE Volunteers Working in Japan

Teams of Project HOPE medical volunteers began arriving in Japan in early May to provide care to individuals and families in communities requiring medical assistance in the aftermath of the earthquake and tsunami that struck the country’s northeastern coast in March.

The volunteers are helping to provide relief for the local volunteer medical teams who have been providing care at temporary clinics and shelters since March.

At the request of the Japanese government, Project HOPE continues to recruit specialized physicians, nurses and other health professionals to support Japan’s health system which has operated non-stop since the disaster hit the island nearly four weeks ago. Volunteer physicians and nurses who specialize in infectious disease, psychiatry, cardiology, geriatrics, and traumatic stress recovery are among the requested specialists to care for patients in the affected areas of Japan as designated by the government.
