Maternal and Child Health Clinics – Project HOPE, in collaboration with a local non-governmental organization, is establishing a series of maternal and child health clinics.  The first one, in Herrera, one of the poorest barrios in the capital city of Santo Domingo, achieved full financial self-sufficiency in 2002 and is now completely run by the local partner.  Project HOPE is still providing technical and financial assistance to the second clinic, in Monte Plata, which is on schedule to reach break even status in 2008.  Read More....

Village Health Banks
– Recognizing the link between lack of economic opportunities and poor health, Project HOPE’s Village Health Banking (VHB) program combines micro-lending with health education.  Established in the Dominican Republic in the spring of 2001, the program has grown to include 50 active lending and health groups in poor sections of Santo Domingo, and began expanding to the city of San Cristobal in January 2005.

Timeline

1996 Project HOPE and a local partner, The Dominican Association of the Order of Malta open the Clínica Materno Infantil (Mother and Child Clinic) in the Buenos Aires de Herrera neighborhood of Santo Domingo
2001 Project HOPE initiates a Village Health Bank Program in the neighborhood surrounding the clinic
2002 Project HOPE begins HIV/AIDS activities with education and counseling in Santo Domingo
January 2003 The Clínica Materno Infantil in Herrera achieves financial sustainability and becomes completely managed by the Order of Malta
June 2003 Project HOPE and the Order of Malta open a new clinic in Monte Plata based on the same model of self-sufficiency as the Herrera clinic
2004 Project HOPE sends 300,000 doses of childhood vaccines in support of a nationwide effort to immunize every child; another humanitarian assistance shipment worth $1.2 million is sent in response to devastating flooding
2006 Another shipment of vaccines, this time worth $3 million, is sent to the Ministry of Health for a nation-wide vaccination campaign
