Maternal and Child Health Clinics – Project HOPE, in collaboration with a local non-governmental organization, is establishing a series of maternal and child health clinics. The first one, in Herrera, one of the poorest barrios in the capital city of Santo Domingo, achieved full financial self-sufficiency in 2002 and is now completely run by the local partner. Project HOPE is still providing technical and financial assistance to the second clinic, in Monte Plata, which is on schedule to reach break even status in 2008.

Village Health Banks – Recognizing the link between lack of economic opportunities and poor health, Project HOPE’s Village Health Banking (VHB) program combines micro-lending with health education. Established in the Dominican Republic in the spring of 2001, the program has grown to include 50 active lending and health groups in poor sections of Santo Domingo, and began expanding to the city of San Cristobal in January 2005.
