Village Health Banks – Since the beginning of Peru’s VHB program in July 1999, more than 6,000 women have participated in this micro-credit and health education program, now focusing on impoverished households in Lima.  Currently, almost 1,000 women are participating in over 50 groups.

Timeline

1962 The SS HOPE docks in Salaverry, providing medical care and training.
1963-1978 Project HOPE implemented public health education programs in Trujillo
1996 Project HOPE returns to Peru, implementing a Child Survival program in rural areas of the San Martin province.
1999 Project HOPE begins a Village Health Bank program in Tarapoto to strengthen the services offered to women in the region.
2001 Project HOPE responds with humanitarian aid following a severe earthquake in the southern regions of Arequipa, Moquegua, and Ayacucho
2002 Project HOPE relocates its VHB activities to Lima.
