Project HOPE and Local Hospitals Celebrate Handover

On June 26, Ambassador Pamela Spratlen attended the final handover ceremony for humanitarian donations provided through the State Department-funded Operation Provide Hope, along with State Secretary of the Ministry of Health Paiza Sunduzbayeva and a representative from the local akim’s office. The donation was valued at $1.9 million and will be distributed to 16 medical and social institutions in Bishkek City, Chui, Osh, and Batken provinces.
Several doctors from the recipient facilities gave testimonials about the value they place on this program, which allows them to offer life-sustaining name-brand drugs like Plavix and Avapro to their patients. The cost savings they achieve from not having to buy this medicine on the market allows them to buy other, much-needed medical supplies and equipment.
Staff of the Bishkek City Hospital #6 offered a tour of their cardiology unit following the ceremony, and showed their careful record-keeping system for distributing the medications. They also showed defibrillators and a cardiograph machine that was donated by the Transit Center.
Project HOPE, a U.S.-based charitable organization, is the local partner for distributing the donation. HOPE will continue to operate a TB treatment and prevention program in Kyrgyzstan, and is searching for other sources of funding to continue the very popular drug donation program.
