ASHA Grant Helps Spread Simulation Teaching Best Practices for Nurses throughout China
By the end of July 2016, using a simulation center, Wuhan University HOPE School of Nursing conducted 12 national workshops on simulation teaching for 389 participants from 24 provinces all over China.
In 2010, Project HOPE and Wuhan University HOPE School of Nursing received a grant from USAID’s Office of American Schools and Hospitals Abroad (ASHA) to help set up a Simulation Research Center at the nursing school. The nursing school purchased advanced simulators and a simulation teaching and learning system from the U.S. and sent the teaching team to the U.S. for expert training on simulation teaching and management.
The simulation lab has enabled the Wuhan University HOPE School of Nursing to become a leading nursing school using simulation teaching in China. It has integrated simulation teaching in the fundamentals of nursing, health assessment and nursing planning and implementation. Since the Simulation Research Center was established in 2012, it has benefited 714 students at the HOPE School of Nursing. In addition, the center has provided learning opportunities for teachers from other nursing schools and health workers in China.
Simulation teaching is a relative new teaching method in China. More nursing schools and professional schools in China realize the usefulness of simulation teaching and are deciding to set up simulation labs. However, most of them don’t know how to integrate simulation teaching in their curriculum. Staff at the Wuhan University HOPE School of Nursing are sharing the expert simulation teaching experiences, learned in the U.S., with other nursing schools, professional schools and hospitals.

At the workshops, Wuhan University HOPE School of Nursing also disseminated U.S. teaching values, philosophy/ideas and best practices, which enhanced participants’ understanding of best practices for nurses in the U.S.
Today, we’re happy to see more nursing schools integrating simulation teaching into curriculum in China.
