Project HOPE Assessing Medical Needs of Communities Devastated by Massive Earthquake in Japan

International humanitarian aid group poised to mobilize medicines and supplies where they are needed most

Project HOPE is assessing the urgent need for medicines and supplies for thousands of people impacted by the earthquake in Japan and the resulting tsunami.

“Project HOPE is in the process of making detailed assessments of exactly what medicines and assistance the people of Japan will need in the immediate aftermath of the disaster and in the future,” said John P. Howe III, M.D., President and CEO of Project HOPE. “I am very concerned about the health of people at risk of serious illness, as search and rescue efforts continue.”

The 8.9 magnitude earthquake on Friday, and the resulting tsunami, devastated communities in northeastern Japan, wiping out critical infrastructure and basic medical services.

If called upon, Project HOPE will draw on its decades of experience in disaster relief and humanitarian aid worldwide to address the specific needs of men, women and children affected by the crisis and determine long-term efforts to help the country recover from this disaster.
