Project HOPE’s Brand
As we look back on 60+ years of delivering HOPE to people in need all over the world, we are thrilled to be Project HOPE.
Building on a Legacy
Our remarkable history dates back to 1958, when Project HOPE was founded by Dr. William B. Walsh, who envisioned a world where everyone has access to ample and adequate medical care. Dr. Walsh had a dream and a cause. He transformed a U.S. navy hospital ship into the S.S. HOPE, the world’s first peacetime hospital ship. The S.S. HOPE travelled the world for years, carrying doctors, nurses and volunteers—delivering medical treatment and training to equip local health care workers with the knowledge, skills, tools, supplies and support to make a lasting impact on the individuals, families and communities they serve. The ship became a global symbol of medical diplomacy and goodwill, and remained our emblem even after it was decommissioned in 1974.

Six decades of humanitarian excellence
Today, our global staff, technical experts and medical volunteer teams are on the ground in more than 25 countries, working side-by-side with local partners to deliver care to those in need — repairing and renewing rudimentary public health systems and deploying in emergencies triggered by disasters like tsunamis and hurricanes. We empower local healthcare workers to expertly implement and teach innovative, lifesaving solutions that will regenerate public health systems for generations to come.
We are proud of our unique and extraordinary past. Everything we stand for as an organization is built on the foundation and legacy of the S.S. HOPE and all that it meant to those who saw it come sailing over the horizon on a mission of mercy.
But what we want you to know most of all, is that we are deeply dedicated to the work we are doing today and developing for the future. While the S.S. HOPE has been a cherished emblem for decades and will always be part of our legacy, its image no longer encapsulates the complexity and breadth of our mission in the 21st Century.
Project HOPE’s brand
Our visual identity honors our past, reflects our current method of operation and matches our pioneering ambition for a bright future ahead, as it represents what actually has truly been at the very center of our work all along:
The personal connection between a human being who needs care and another who can provide it.
Project HOPE places lifesaving power in the hands of people that can make a difference.
Hands represent human connection.
Hands help. Hands heal. Hands teach.
Hands bring HOPE.
