Caring for the Youngest Patients in Vietnam

It was a fun last day caring for children in Vietnam as Project HOPE volunteers Marybeth Wargo, a Pediatric Nurse from Austin, Texas and Lauren Deming, a Nurse from Orem, Utah, worked in the Pediatrics Ward aboard the USNS Mercy.

With smiles on their faces and love in their eyes, the two volunteers made a huge impact on the lives of the children they treated in Vietnam.

“We had a great day,” said Wargo. “I worked with a patient that went in for scar revision surgery which had to be wrapped, and a cleft lip repair. The burn patients are very unique, because it is different from what we deal with in the States.”

Wargo joyfully played with the children as the day went on, carrying one little boy around on her shoulders.

“It is great work with these children. It is refreshing to see children that are healthy and get better after surgery, which is not always the case back home,” said Wargo.

Deming, who normally works with adult patients, enjoyed her time trying out a new role in the Pediatrics Ward.

“It has gone especially well. I was really impressed with how corporative and fun the patients have been,” said Deming. “I have learned a lot from them, from their family units, the community, and the parents supporting each other.”

Deming appreciated the opportunity to serve during Pacific Partnership 2012, and hopes to continue to work with children when she gets home.

Deming added, “A little bit of love goes a long way with them.”
