Donated Medical Supplies Change Aizada’s Life
Aizada was one of the grateful recipients of a PET vehicle, a hand cranked wheelchair made to withstand off-road terrain. Now she can leave her home alone, go shopping and even help her mother buy products.
During a ceremony to present donated medical supplies to the Ministry of Social Development on June 20, 2012, Project HOPE staff had the pleasure of meeting an amazing woman named Aizada. Aizada is a 35-year-old disabled woman who lives with her mother in a suburb of Bishkek. Until recently, it was very difficult for her to get out of the house alone. She moved with crutches and an old wheelchair. For that reason, she only completed three classes in high school and has minimal reading and writing skills. Receiving a meager disability pension of 2,000 som (43 USD), she spent most of her time at home helping her mother and trying to make money by knitting socks and baby things.
In modern Kyrgyz society, daily life is a challenge for people with disabilities. The Ministry of Social Development is now focusing more attention on resolving the challenges of people with disabilities and Project HOPE is stepping up to help. Personal Energy Transportation (PET) vehicles, walkers, canes, crutches, orthopedic products and other medical supplies were part of the humanitarian aid presented to the Ministry of Social Development as part of “Operation Provide Hope.”
