Donated Medicines Help Premature Babies

Through donations of medical supplies and products, the Strategic Medical Re-Supply Program expects to have lasting impact on the well-being of patients and the health systems where we partner. Thanks to the generous support from our donor partners, we touch the lives of more than 400,000 patients in Macedonia.

Project HOPE has been working with the University Children’s Clinic in Skopje, Macedonia, since 2007. The Clinic in Skopje has faced both financial and treatment availability obstacles for respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) in premature babies. In July 2016, our long-term partner, AbbVie provided an in-kind donation of 60 bottles of Survanta, a treatment for RDS.

“The first amount of the medicine was administered to a kid with massive Meconium Aspiration Syndrome, and the results are very good,” said Adrijana Georgiev, University Children’s Clinic. “The doctors are much more satisfied with the outcome shown from the donation than the equal one they were using prior.” [Note: Results may vary for each patient.]

The Strategic Medical Re-Supply Program (SMRP) is an innovative program designed to strengthen the health systems as they work to sustainably improve health systems to provide high quality patient care. Project HOPE works closely with the Ministries of Health in SMRP countries to assess and identify critical medical products, supplies, and equipment needs at hospitals throughout the countries we work in. Through our engagement with partners in the US and Europe who provide generous donations, we are able to deliver essential medicines and products which strengthen the health care facilities we work with and provide better care to their patients.
