Project HOPE President and CEO Dr. John P. Howe III Receives Prestigious Award in Shanghai for Contributions in Health Care in China’s Most Populated City

Project HOPE President and CEO, Dr. John P. Howe III, received the prestigious Magnolia Award from officials in Shanghai for the NGO’s decades of work to improve health care in China.

The award recognizes Dr. Howe’s outstanding contribution to the city of Shanghai.  Project HOPE helped develop the Shanghai Children’s Medical Center (SCMC), one of the world’s premier pediatric heart centers.   SCMC performs lifesaving heart surgery on nearly 3400 children each year.  Project HOPE provided more than $37 million in medical equipment for the hospital which opened in 1998.  HOPE continues to support SCMC through at least 16 training programs for professional health care workers in the areas of diabetes, children’s nutrition, patient safety training, child development, critical care medicine, cancer care, and health professional training for advanced practice.

“It also shows how cooperation between U.S.-based groups and Chinese leaders can create expertise and enhance public health in rapidly-emerging China.”

Project HOPE has been involved in efforts to improve the health of communities in China for more than 28 years through a strong partnership with the Ministry of Health in addressing needs and advancing health professional training with the support of corporate partners.  China’s large population, diverse demography, and rapid economic development have created a growing need for health care services.
