Dr. John P. Howe III, President and CEO of Project HOPE, Receives Prestigious Magnolia Award in Shanghai
Dr. John P. Howe III, President and CEO of Project HOPE, was honored with the prestigious Magnolia Award for his outstanding contribution to the people of Shanghai.
Earlier this fall, Dr. John P. Howe III, President and CEO of Project HOPE, was honored with the prestigious Magnolia Award for his outstanding contribution to the people of Shanghai, in particular for his role in helping to develop the Shanghai Children’s Medical Center, one of the world’s premier pediatric heart centers.
The Magnolia Award, named after the city’s flower, is Shanghai’s highest honor presented annually to foreigners by the Mayor of Shanghai in recognition of contributions to the city’s social and economic development. Dr. Howe was unable to attend the official Magnolia Award Ceremony with Mayor Han Zheng in September, due to his prior commitment to HOPE programs in Africa at the same time.
Instead, the Vice Mayor of Shanghai, Shen Xiaoming presented the Magnolia Award medal and commendation to Dr. Howe when he was in Shanghai on November 1, for the 10th anniversary celebration of Project HOPE’s Rural Fellows Training Program.
“I am honored to receive this award and immensely proud of the many health care professionals, both American and Chinese, who have contributed to the success of the Shanghai Children’s Medical Center,” said Dr. Howe.
Project HOPE and its generous corporate donors provided more than $37 million in medical equipment for the Shanghai Children’s Medical Center which opened in 1998. HOPE continues to support SCMC through at least 16 training programs for professional health care workers, which include diabetes, children’s nutrition, patient safety training, child development, critical care medicine, cancer care and health professional training for advanced practice.
Dr. Howe said, “The highly specialized, excellent care received by young patients at SCMC is an indication of how Project HOPE’s mission of training local doctors, nurses and health professionals can help build stronger communities for generations to come. It also shows how cooperation between U.S.-based groups and Chinese leaders can create expertise and enhance public health in rapidly-emerging China.”
