Project HOPE and the Wuhan University HOPE School of Nursing are jointly celebrating the life and legacy of Dr. C. J. Huang on the occasion of his 100th birthday. A generous philanthropist, Dr. Huang’s partnership with Project HOPE began in 1993 with a goal of building capacity at the People’s Hospital of Liuyang City.
The Wuhan University HOPE School of Nursing was co-established in 2002 in response to the university’s request to the increasing needs of nursing professionals. The nursing school became the first international academic cooperation institution in nursing education in China.
Each year, Project HOPE nursing volunteers train faculty members, teach students and promote international exchanges.
Today, the HOPE School of Nursing is one of the preeminent centers of nursing education in China with:
26 full-time faculty (10 hold Ph.D. degrees and 16 hold Master’s degrees)
36 part-time teaching faculty
746 students graduates to date (including 6 with Ph.D. degrees and 146 with Master’s degrees)
259 undergraduate students from 11 Chinese provinces
48 graduate students
6 Ph.D. students
more than 5,000 continuing education students nationwide.
Graduates of the HOPE School of Nursing are in high demand, and student employment rate is 95 percent.
With the technical support of Project HOPE and Huang family financial support, the Wuhan University HOPE School of Nursing is now focused on becoming an internationally accredited nursing school within five years, through continued improvements in nursing education and a greater emphasis on nursing research.
The generosity of Dr. Huang, during his long lifetime and through the extraordinary legacy gift he left upon his death in 2012, continues to support a wide variety of programs that are improving health care quality and capacity in Liuyang City, Hunan Province, and advancing the practice of nursing in Hubei and throughout China.
