The Society of Early Arrivals was created by Project HOPE, with the support of Abbvie, in Hong Kong. The “Society” offers a social platform for parents of babies born prematurely to exchange their experiences and concerns in caring for their children.
Project HOPE and the Hong Kong Pediatric Nurses Association hosted a seminar for parents of premature babies on November 22, 2014. The aims of the seminar were
- To provide a platform for parents to share their journeys in taking care of their premature babies at home
- To inform parents about proper safety and home care for premature babies
- To distribute the premature babies home care booklet to the parents
- To listen to parents concerns and needs for premature babies development and care
- To promote the social support platform for parents of premature babies
The seminar was a terrific success. More than 60 parents and grandparents attended the three-hour session, which covered topics ranging from social resource availability to neuro-behavioral challenges and what to expect during different stages of development. One pediatrician, a social worker, a nursing professor and three specialty nurses were on-hand to share their knowledge and answer questions.
In response to the call to provide more guidance and information about premature babies’ care at home, Project HOPE created a booklet for parents to understand medical issues, development milestones and disease prevention strategies. The booklet was well received by the parents in attendance, who worked with Project HOPE to finalize its contents.
Project HOPE will distribute the booklet among various neonatal intensive care units in Hong Kong, with the hope that all parents of premature infants will receive adequate information to safeguard their precious babies in the hospital and at home.
