Major League Baseball and the Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA) today announced a joint contribution of $210,000 to aid relief efforts in the Bahamas in response to the devastation by Hurricane Dorian. The donation is being made on September 18th, which is Roberto Clemente Day throughout MLB, in recognition of the late Hall of Famer’s humanitarian legacy. The donation will be divided by $70,000 each to Project Hope, Water Mission, and SBP, which covers immediate medical supplies, water infrastructure & consumption, and long-term rebuilding efforts, respectively. - Project HOPE Ships Medical Supplies To Bahamas

Some 8 322 adolescent girls from 32 schools in Oshikoto Region have been reached through HIV prevention education, with more than half of the them identified as eligible from the provision of a comprehensive package of services to mitigate the impact of HIV. This was done through the DREAMS project under the auspices of Project Hope Namibia in collaboration with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

- Millersville Pediatrician Provides Relief In Mozambique After Disastrous Cyclone Hits

Upon arriving in Mozambique on March 23, Dr. Andre Gvozden, a Millersville-based pediatrician and owner of Gvozden Pediatrics, joined the Project HOPE team and set up camp in Beira, the country’s fourth-largest city. Due to damaged roads or flooding that prevented ground access into several towns, Gvozden and a small team of doctors were flown via helicopter to neighboring towns to provide medical relief.

Project HOPE was recently privileged to honor Laura Bush for her and her family’s contributions to global health at our sixtieth-year celebration. When I asked her what had motivated President George W. Bush to launch the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) in 2003, she replied, “George just thought it was wrong that AIDS treatment was available and millions of people would die without it.” PEPFAR has been about people, not politics or charity. It’s also been about data-driven decision making, mutual respect between countries, and the expectation of joint investment by partner countries to achieve lasting results.
