World Humanitarian Day: Aid Workers are Needed Now More Than Ever
This World Humanitarian Day Project HOPE recognizes the contributions of aid workers across the world. 2026 has been punctuated by natural disasters, ongoing conflicts, and health emergencies that have called many humanitarian workers into action, sometimes putting their own lives on the line to deliver relief to those who need it most. We take today to recognize the humility and sacrifice of these essential aid workers.
The landscape humanitarian workers face is increasingly dangerous, and the needs of vulnerable and at-risk populations have only worsened. In the past three years, over 1,000 humanitarian workers have been killed in the line of duty.
“Attacks on health care, on ambulances, hospitals, and the aid workers who run toward danger to save others, has become a repeated and deliberate strategy,” said Rabih Torbay, Project HOPE’s CEO. “Despite this, humanitarians continue to show up. They continue to respond. But we should not normalize this. Those who are providing assistance should never be a target. Protecting neutral and impartial health care in conflict is not optional. It is a legal and moral obligation.”
The targeting of ambulances, aid workers, and health facilities not only violates international humanitarian law but prevents organizations from continuing to show up to help those in need. If the danger becomes too great, we run the risk of seeing humanitarian aid efforts scale back, leaving communities behind at their greatest time of need.
This year, the UN calls us to “make protecting each other our greatest achievement.” This means holding those who target humanitarian aid workers accountable for these atrocities. It means recognizing the increased risk that drone targeting poses to humanitarian workers in conflict zones. And it means recognizing that local aid workers are the ones facing the greatest danger.
On World Humanitarian Day, Project HOPE reaffirms its commitment to protecting humanitarian and health workers who put their lives on the line to provide lifesaving care and support to vulnerable populations. Their safety, dignity, and ability to deliver aid must be protected. We stand with these dedicated workers – including our own beloved colleagues who work on the frontlines of disaster and crisis around the globe – and call for greater protection to ensure they can continue their work without fear.
