We are deeply concerned for the people of Venezuela after a 7.3 magnitude earthquake rocked the northern coast of the country today. The impact of the quake was felt as far away as the Colombian capital, Bogota, and across the Caribbean. We are closely monitoring the situation and the impact on communities in affected areas. Residents have fled their homes while buildings in the capital, Caracas, have been evacuated. The earthquake also prompted a temporary tsunami warning and the region remains on alert. The people of Venezuela have been suffering from an economic crisis which has caused a severe shortage of food, medicine and other resources. We are in contact with our partners in the region to assess the situation and potential health needs resulting from today’s disaster.
