Project HOPE is assessing the situation across the Western Pacific as Typhoon Soudelor rips through East Asia. Soudelor, the most powerful storm on the planet this year, rapidly grew in strength to a Category 5 hurricane in the Atlantic and Eastern Pacific basins on Monday. The U.S. Military’s Joint Typhoon Warning Center said the typhoon packed sustained winds of 220 kph (180 mph) at its peak on Monday, pummeling Saipan, an island in the U.S. territory of the Northern Marianas. Residents of Saipan are suffering a shortage of water and generators are being shipped from Guam to restore electricity. Soudelor has since weakened but still poses a threat to Taiwan and eastern China with the potential to cause massive flooding, damaging winds and dangerous tidal surges. Project HOPE is on alert for potential humanitarian needs of communities affected by the storm across the region.
