Using the sophisticated retinal scanning equipment Dr. Robert Crammer uncovered a potentially serious condition in a patient that had no acute visual symptoms.
Project HOPE staff, volunteers and partner organization VisionQuest Biomedical LLC, took the HOPE Mobile Clinic to Charter Fitness in Rio Rancho, New Mexico last week to provide health screenings to club members.
Volunteer medical staff conducted BMI, cholesterol, blood pressure and retinal screenings at the afternoon health clinic.
Using the sophisticated retinal scanning equipment onboard the HOPE Mobile Clinic, Dr. Robert Crammer, an eye doctor from VisionQuest, uncovered a potentially serious condition in a patient that had no acute visual symptoms.
“I discovered a retinal cholesterol emboli,” says Dr. Cramer. “The patient is already under the care of a local ophthalmologist, so we supplied the patient with copies of the retinal photographs to forward to his provider. The patient planned to call his ophthalmologist the next morning to advise him/her of the photography finding.”
Retinal cholesterol emboli can be a sign of other serious cardiovascular conditions throughout the body.
Of course Project HOPE staff and volunteers were extremely satisfied to have included retinal evaluations at this event and also help others at the wellness fair chart a course for better health.
