Volunteers returning to Haiti to continue medical work after spending three days at sea waiting out Hurricane Irene.
Volunteer work requires flexibility and the new Project HOPE volunteers in Haiti got an immediate lesson in adaptability. After a quick orientation upon boarding the USNS Comfort on August 19, the volunteers got right to work in Port-au-Prince, only to find out a day later, the Comfort would be pulling anchor and heading out to sea to avoid Hurricane Irene.
Luckily, the hurricane avoided causing a lot of damage in Haiti, and the Comfort is expected to arrive off the coast of Port-au-Prince again today. The Continuing Promise 2011 medical team, including 20 Project HOPE volunteers, are eager to get back to what they came to Haiti to do – provide medical care and health education to those in need.
