I am overwhelmed with the solicitude of our hosts and falling in love with the country of Cameroon.
The new hospital/clinic that we are consulting at seems to have many good staff and has an inspired direction due to its founding as a philanthropic project of a wealthy Cameroonian entrepreneur. It will take time to get the right balance of achieving first-rate curative care (the goal that inspired this effort) for all.
At least on the surface, people are truly receptive to my MPH (Master of Public Health) point of view although they may be a bit surprised since they were perhaps expecting something more of the visiting senior clinical professor. I haven’t been away from active medical practice long, however, so I can contribute in that way as well, though I feel it is more like an exchange among equals who come from slightly different backgrounds.
Thanks to Matt and Omar for smoothing the way in and being great company for Jo and I, too.
Jo is obviously a great choice to start getting a handle on the organizational needs of the nursing staff. I’m already anticipating missing her when she leaves in three weeks.
