About Beijing
China has some of the highest mortality rates from heart disease in the world, largely due to high sodium intake and inadequate control of hypertension. Nearly a quarter of Chinese citizens suffer from hypertension — a key risk factor of cardiovascular disease — but less than half of all citizens with hypertension are aware of their own health status.
Project HOPE’s Beijing office implements nationwide programs to combat noncommunicable diseases. As our central government affairs office in China, our office works in collaboration with the government to develop policies to improve NCD health care and to help coordinate national disaster relief efforts.

Bringing HOPE to Beijing
Our history in Beijing
Since 1998, Project HOPE has been implementing national programs focused on reducing the impact of NCDs throughout China.
We began our NCD work in China by building capacity for doctors and nurses at national and provincial tertiary hospitals in diabetes diagnosis, treatment and patient education. In 2007, we expanded our work to city and community health-service facilities to enhance their capacity to provide quality diabetes education and care. These efforts are in support of China’s national policy to improve a tiered health care delivery system.
Helping Hypertensive Patients Manage Their Blood Pressure
In 2018, HOPE began supporting a local NGO to implement the China Hypertension Management Program in partnership with the Resolve to Save Lives initiative. Through the program, we aim to help at least 25 million hypertensive patients in China get their blood pressure under control in the next five years, with 5 million patients achieving their goal in the first two years.
The program also endeavors to help 5 million people reduce their sodium intake by at least 10% over two years. Project HOPE provides grant management and reporting support to the Beijing Lisheng Cardiovascular Health Foundation, the program implementer. We are also helping to develop educational materials about reducing salt intake for use in community centers, schools and workplaces in Beijing and across the region.
Our Impact
In the last two decades, our work has helped thousands of health care workers throughout China learn how to treat and support people living with diabetes, effectively impacting tens of thousands of patients across the country. In 2007, Project HOPE’s work with corporate partners Becton Dickinson and Eli Lilly was recognized by the Ministry of Health in a publication identifying major programs addressing diabetes in China; our work has continued to garner recognition from the National Health Commission (formerly the Ministry of Health), academic associations, leading hospitals and key opinion leaders in diabetes care in China.
In 2017, Project HOPE became one of the first NGOs to be officially recognized under the government’s new registration standards for international organizations operating in China. Our programs continue to help local health care systems provide patient screening, counseling, and education on NCDs.
“This program will play an important role in improving diabetes understanding in China to curb that growth. On behalf of the Ministry of Health, I would like to say that we look forward to cooperating with Project HOPE and the sponsoring companies to achieve this goal.”
