Welcome to Project HOPE
As a new Project HOPE supporter, you're joining a 60-year legacy of impact – and you're helping empower hands of hope around the world today, and for the future. On behalf the people whose lives you are touching, thank you.
It all started with one person who set out to make a difference…
Project HOPE’s founder, William B. Walsh, M.D., was moved by poor health conditions he observed while serving on a Navy destroyer during World War II. In 1958, he persuaded U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower to sell him a U.S. Navy hospital ship for $150 and, with the support of corporations and generous benefactors, the ship was transformed into the SS HOPE.
Over the following 14 years, the SS HOPE made 11 voyages to serve the world’s most vulnerable people in every region of the world, providing healthcare for local communities and building health systems that could renew themselves for decades to come.
Since 1974, Project HOPE has been conducting land-based programs, carrying on the legacy of Dr. Walsh. The spirit of the SS HOPE lives on today through our global and local staff, technical experts and medical volunteers working in 26 countries, building the capacity of the health workforce in communities that need it most.
In our 60-year history, Project HOPE has been funded by generous contributions that have enabled us to…
- Provide healthcare for tens of millions of people in 100+ countries
- Train over 1 million healthcare workers
- Deliver over $3 billion of medicines and supplies
…and today, that HOPE lives on, thanks to you.
When you support Project HOPE, you join a group of amazing, caring individuals who, together, are saving lives around the world, every day.
- You help save the lives of newborns in their earliest days and weeks, when they are most vulnerable
- You help train healthcare workers and ensure they have the tools they need to save more lives
- You help people who are fighting chronic illnesses and infectious diseases live better, healthier lives
- And you help provide emergency care for communities plunged into crisis due to natural disasters or medical emergencies
You help people like 9-year-old Nayeli Pagan in Puerto Rico. Nayeli has Type 1 diabetes, and she needs insulin to control its effects. Following Hurricane Maria, her home was left without electricity. Without power, her insulin could not be kept cold and would be rendered useless. Thanks to the generosity of supporters, HOPE was able to provide a year’s worth of insulin.
Nayeli’s story is just one of many. Because of the compassion of supporters like you, she and millions more around the world are living healthier lives. Thank you!
