Video: A Brighter Future for Newborns in the Dominican Republic
Project HOPE's Saving the Newborn initiative is transforming neonatal health and making the difference between life and death for newborns in the Dominican Republic.
Posted: May 13, 2021
The Dominican Republic has some of the highest neonatal and maternal mortality rates in the region, despite that most women give birth in a hospital. There are numerous obstacles in the way of a safe delivery: a lack of infrastructure, equipment, and training means that many women and newborns don’t have the support they need in the critical moments during and after birth.
Through the Saving the Newborn initiative, Project HOPE is changing that narrative, helping update hospital spaces and providing the training frontline doctors and nurses need. That work is saving lives in the Dominican Republic, and around the world: Last year, our maternal and neonatal health work reached more than 250,000 women, newborns, and children under 5.
