Project HOPE Commends the Biden Administration’s Commitment to Global Health
Project HOPE supports the Biden administration’s commitment to invest in global health, strengthen the World Health Organization, and accelerate efforts toward the United Nations Sustainable Development Agenda.
Washington, D.C. (February 4, 2022) — As COVID-19 continues to erase key global health gains worldwide, Project HOPE commends the Biden administration’s commitment to global health, including combatting HIV/AIDS; advancing maternal, neonatal, and child health; and closing gaps in infectious and noncommunicable diseases.
“The pandemic has had a substantial impact on global health systems worldwide, exacerbating as well as creating inequities that prevent people from accessing health care,” said Rabih Torbay, President and CEO of Project HOPE. “We already know COVID-19 has set back the fight to end the AIDS epidemic by 2030 and has caused major regressions in maternal and child health worldwide. Going forward, we must ensure that local health systems have the support they need to recover these losses and ensure everyone has equitable access to care.
“Though our immediate goal should be to end COVID-19 — including increasing equitable distributions of vaccines worldwide — we must not forget that more than half the world’s population already lacked access to essential health services even before the pandemic. The United States can and should play a crucial role in advancing global health, and Project HOPE supports the Biden administration’s commitment to strengthening the World Health Organization and accelerating efforts toward the United Nations Sustainable Development Agenda.”
