Alan Weil

Vice President of Health Policy & Editor-in-Chief of Health Affairs

Alan Weil joined Project HOPE in 2014 as Editor-in-Chief of Health Affairs, the nation’s leading peer-reviewed journal about health, health care, and policy that is published by Project HOPE. He believes that the interdisciplinary nature of the journal and its affiliated publications (Health Affairs Scholar and Health Affairs Forefront) and their direct effect on federal, state, and local policy, as well as the guidance they provide to health system leaders around the world, make them unique.

As editor-in-chief of Health Affairs and its affiliated publications, Weil sets the overall direction of the journal and its associated products and events. This involves determining priority topics for his team to focus on, overseeing the operations of the division, and leading a staff of nearly fifty people.

Weil previously acted as the executive director of the National Academy for State Health Policy (NASHP), starting in 2004. Before his leadership at NASHP, he directed the Urban Institute’s Assessing New Federalism project, served as the executive director of the Colorado Department of Health Care Policy and Financing, was the health policy advisor to Colorado governor Roy Romer, and was the assistant general counsel in the Massachusetts Department of Medical Security. In 2016, he was appointed to a three-year term on MACPAC, the Medicaid and CHIP Payment and Access Commission.

Weil is a frequent speaker on national and state health policy, Medicaid, federalism, and implementation of the Affordable Care Act. He holds a law degree from Harvard Law School, a master’s degree in public policy from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, and an undergraduate degree in economics and political science from the University of California Berkeley.
