Project HOPE Welcomes the U.S.’s Plan to Establish a Bureau of Global Health Security & Diplomacy

Washington, DC (14 December 2022) – Project HOPE the global health and humanitarian aid organization applauds Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken’s announcement to establish a U.S. Bureau of Global Health Security and Diplomacy to streamline collaboration within the U.S. government and with international partners.

The new Bureau will combine key stakeholder offices under the leadership of a single Assistant Secretary. Secretary Blinken’s intention for Ambassador Dr. John Nkengasong to be the first leader of the new bureau is also a welcome and sound proposal, given Dr. Nkengasong’s vast public health and diplomatic experience. Congress will now review the proposal and should quickly offer support to enable the changes to move forward.

“COVID-19 was a stark reminder of the interconnectedness of our global health and shone a light on the need for greater global collaboration between stakeholders,” said Project HOPE’s President & CEO, Rabih Torbay. “As a global health organization, Project HOPE is encouraged by the U.S.’s commitment to improving global health and global health security and we look forward to supporting the work of the new bureau as we help to build sustainable systems that can both deliver better health now and withstand future public health shocks.”
