Situation Report | Hurricane Melissa


Project HOPE’s Emergency Response Team is responding to Hurricane Melissa after it made landfall in Jamaica as a Category 5 storm. The hurricane has had a catastrophic impact due to its extreme winds, violent storm surge, and slow-moving nature.

Hurricane Melissa made landfall near New Hope, Jamaica on Tuesday afternoon as a Category 5 storm bringing unprecedented rainfall, 185 mph winds, and gusts as high as 252 mph causing catastrophic damage. The storm was Jamaica’s worst hurricane on record and is now tied with the 1935 Labor Day Hurricane as the strongest hurricane in 170+ years of recorded Atlantic history.
