‘The Suffering is Overwhelming’: A Doctor’s Story from Gaza
Follow Dr. Abdallah AbuShammalah inside Project HOPE’s clinic in Gaza for a first-hand look at the daily suffering caused by war.
Dr. Abdallah AbuShammalah has not been spared tragedy in Gaza. He lost his brother and his home to the war. He has been displaced more than four times and, like many of his fellow Gazans, struggles to access even the basic necessities for daily survival.
“Living and working in Gaza during the war has been a daily struggle for survival physically, emotionally, and mentally,” he says.
His daily work as a doctor is another reminder of the war’s tragedies. “At work, the suffering is overwhelming,” he says. Inside Project HOPE’s clinic, Dr. AbuShammalah treats starving children, pregnant women, chronically ill patients, and families suffering without food or shelter.
“We return home daily carrying the weight of these stories,” he says.
