Supporting health facilities and communities impacted by the October 7, 2023 Hamas attacks in Israel
The Context
Approximately 300,000 people have been displaced inside Israel due to the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, including entire communities in southern Israel that were destroyed in the October 7 Hamas attacks. Those who are displaced are in need of basic hygiene items and other necessities, while hospitals that sustained damage and/or have an increased patient load need medical equipment and supplies.
Our Impact
Project HOPE has been helping to provide mental health and psychosocial support services (MHPSS) in collaboration with three local partners: the Yuri Shtern Holistic Center, NATAL: Israel Trauma and Resiliency Center, and Shamir Medical Center. This support has included stress management programs, urgently needed psychotherapy sessions, and an innovative hyperbaric oxygen treatment plan for those with treatment-resistant post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
Project HOPE provided critical medical equipment to four hospitals damaged during the October 7 attacks – Shamir Medical Center, Barzilai Medical Center, Hadassah Hospital, and Sheba Medical Center – including mobile ultrasound machines, defibrillator monitors, generators, bladder scanners, and specialty wheelchairs and equipment for patients with spinal cord injuries. We are also supporting the rehabilitation and reconstruction of Barzilai’s Children’s Developmental and Rehabilitation Center, which provides support to children with developmental challenges.
In the aftermath of the October 7 attacks, Project HOPE supported displaced communities by providing hygiene items including toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo, deodorant, bedsheets, towels, and clothes. Project HOPE continues to identify opportunities to strengthen capacity, repair damaged facilities, and equip local health workers with the tools they need to save lives.
In Israel, Project HOPE:
- Supports comprehensive mental health and psychosocial support services
- Provides critical medical equipment and supplies to impacted hospitals
- Supports the rehabilitation and reconstruction of damaged health facilities
- Provides hygiene supplies for displaced communities
