Project HOPE Responds to UNSC Vote on International Intervention in Haiti

In response to today’s United Nations Security Council vote authorizing Kenya to lead a one-year Multinational Security Support Mission in Haiti, Project HOPE’s Director of Policy and Advocacy, Jed Meline, said:

“Today’s UN Security Council vote authorizing Kenya to lead the Multinational Security Support Mission in Haiti is a positive step. While international intervention should always be a last resort, the worsening humanitarian and health crisis demands action. This intervention’s success depends on active Haitian involvement. Haiti has a mixed history of international interventions and this multinational action should take a supportive role, allowing Haitians to lead meaningful change in their country.

“It’s essential to recognize that intervention alone won’t bring stability to Haiti. The international community, in collaboration with local Haitian organizations, must chart new paths for aid.  One practical step, that would also help relieve some pressure on the MSS mission, would be to open additional air and seaports for goods, including humanitarian commodities, allowing them to bypass Port-au-Prince – Another action that would recognize a realistic timeframe for political stability would be to adopt a multi-year humanitarian approach. The future of Haiti is at stake.”

Project HOPE has a long history of partnering with local communities in Haiti to enhance primary health care services in challenging environments marked by gang brutality, gender-based violence, weather disasters, and disease outbreaks. Project HOPE responded to emergencies including the 2010 and 2021 earthquakes, Hurricane Matthew, and the most recent cholera outbreak and continues to provide long-term health support in the Grand Sud region.
